Dr. Iwaki Akiyama is a professor of the Faculty of Life and Medical Sciences, Doshisha University, Japan. He is an Administrative Councilor of WFUMB in term of 2017-2019. He is a member of the Safety Committee of WFUMB. He founded the Medical Ultrasound Research Center of Doshisha University in 2013 and has been the director since then. He completed his Ph.D in electrical engineering at Keio University in 1987. His research interests include ultrasonic imaging, bioeffects of ultrasound and ultrasonic tissue characterization. He has been the chairman of the Ultrasonic Equipment and Safety Committee of JSUM since 2008. He founded the Safety Committee of AFSUMB in 2012 and has been the chairman since then. He was awarded the Matsuo Memorial Award by The Japan Society of Ultrasonics in Medicine in 2005. He studied ground penetrating radar as a visiting associate professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California, Santa Barbara from 1993 to 1994.
